The Man Behind the Miracle: How Obadiah Changed Israel from the Inside

When most people think about the miracle on Mount Carmel, they immediately think of Elijah.

And understandably so.

Elijah was the prophet who stood alone before King Ahab, the prophets of Baal, and the people of Israel. He called the nation to a decision. He prayed a simple prayer. Fire fell from heaven. The people cried out, “The Lord, He is God!”

It was one of the most dramatic moments in the entire Old Testament.

But behind that public miracle was a hidden servant.

Behind the prophet on the mountain was a faithful man in the palace.

His name was Obadiah.

And while Elijah changed Israel from the outside, Obadiah changed Israel from the inside.

God Had a Man Inside the Palace

The Bible says:

“So Ahab summoned Obadiah, who was in charge of the palace. (Obadiah was a devoted follower of the Lord. Once when Jezebel had tried to kill all the Lord’s prophets, Obadiah had hidden 100 of them in two caves. He put fifty prophets in each cave and supplied them with food and water.)” — 1 Kings 18:3-4 NLT

That is an amazing statement.

Ahab was one of the most wicked kings in Israel’s history. Jezebel was actively trying to destroy the prophets of the Lord. Baal worship had infected the nation. Darkness was everywhere.

And yet, right in the middle of that corrupt system, God had a man.

Not outside the palace.

Inside the palace.

Obadiah was “in charge of the palace.” In modern language, he was something like the chief administrator, chief of staff, or chief operating officer of the kingdom.

He had responsibility. He had access. He had influence. He had resources.

And God used all of it.

Elijah Had the Fire. Obadiah Had the Keys.

Elijah stood on Mount Carmel.

Obadiah walked the halls of the palace.

Elijah confronted evil publicly.

Obadiah resisted evil privately.

Elijah called down fire from heaven.

Obadiah carried food and water to hidden prophets.

Elijah was seen by the nation.

Obadiah was seen by God.

And both men were necessary.

This is one of the great lessons of Scripture: God does not only use the person standing on the platform. He also uses the person standing behind the person on the platform.

God does not only use the voice that thunders. He also uses the hands that quietly serve.

God does not only use the public prophet. He also uses the faithful administrator.

The Courage Nobody Saw

Obadiah’s courage was not loud, but it was real.

Jezebel was killing the prophets of the Lord. This was not a mild disagreement. This was not religious tension. This was life and death.

Yet Obadiah hid one hundred prophets in two caves and supplied them with food and water.

Think about what that required.

Every loaf of bread was a risk.

Every container of water was a risk.

Every secret trip to those caves could have cost him his position, his reputation, and possibly his life.

Obadiah was not standing on a stage receiving applause. He was quietly keeping God’s prophets alive.

History often remembers the man who calls down fire.

Heaven also remembers the man who carries bread and water.

God Uses Number Twos to Change the World

Obadiah is one of the great “number twos” in the Bible.

He was not the king.

He was not the prophet on Mount Carmel.

He was not the national voice of revival.

But he was faithful in the place God assigned him.

Throughout Scripture, God repeatedly uses people who serve in secondary positions to accomplish primary purposes.

Joseph served in Pharaoh’s house.

Daniel served in Babylon.

Esther served in Persia.

Joshua served Moses.

Elisha served Elijah.

Timothy served Paul.

And Obadiah served in Ahab’s palace.

They were not always the most visible people in the story, but they were indispensable to the purpose of God.

Never underestimate the power of a faithful number two.

Your Palace May Be Your Assignment

Sometimes we assume that if God is really going to use us, He must remove us from difficult places.

But Obadiah teaches us that sometimes God uses us by keeping us in difficult places.

The palace was not where Obadiah lost his faith.

The palace was where Obadiah lived his faith.

The palace was not proof that he had compromised.

The palace was proof that God had positioned him.

Maybe your palace is a company.

Maybe it is a ministry.

Maybe it is a school.

Maybe it is a government office.

Maybe it is a family situation.

Maybe it is a place where you are not the loudest voice, the most visible leader, or the person everyone notices.

But if God placed you there, He can use you there.

You may be closer to the miracle than you realize.

Faithfulness Behind the Scenes Matters

I love Obadiah because he reminds us that serving behind the scenes is not second-class service.

For more than 40 years, I have had the privilege of serving behind the scenes, from the inside, as a number two in the ministry of Morris Cerullo World Evangelism.

I have learned something powerful: you do not have to be the person in front to be part of what God is doing.

You can serve another man’s ministry and still fulfill your own divine assignment.

You can support the vision and still carry a vital part of the anointing.

You can help lift another person’s hands and still change lives around the world.

Obadiah did not need Elijah’s platform to make a difference.

He needed only to be faithful with the position God had entrusted to him.

The Man Behind the Miracle

When fire fell on Mount Carmel, Israel saw Elijah.

But God also saw Obadiah.

God saw the hidden courage.

God saw the secret sacrifice.

God saw the food carried to the caves.

God saw the water delivered in a time of drought.

God saw a man who used his position not for self-promotion, but for kingdom preservation.

Obadiah may not have stood in front of the nation, but he helped preserve the prophetic voice of the nation.

He was the man behind the miracle.

And he changed Israel from the inside.

A Prayer for Faithfulness Where God Has Placed You

Father, thank You for the example of Obadiah. Thank You for reminding us that You do not only use people in public places, but You also use people in hidden places. Help us to be faithful wherever You have positioned us. Give us courage to serve You when no one sees, strength to do what is right when it costs us something, and wisdom to use every opportunity, relationship, and resource for Your kingdom.

Lord, teach us not to despise the assignment You have given us. Whether we are on the mountain like Elijah or in the palace like Obadiah, help us to be faithful. Use our lives to protect what You are doing, serve those You have called, and advance Your purpose in the earth. Make us men and women who are devoted followers of the Lord. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
