Two years in the making—and I wanted you to see it first

Dear friends,

For the past two years, I’ve been working on something close to my heart: The God That David Knew. Before I share it more widely, I wanted you to hear the story behind it—and see the cover first.

This book began with something I started noticing in the Psalms.

I began to see that David had tapped into an incredible Bible secret: he had discovered who God really was. Scripture is God’s self-revelation—God making Himself known to us. In the Psalms, I saw David responding to that revelation, trusting God for who He had revealed Himself to be.

Proverbs 25:2 tells us that it is God’s glory to conceal a matter and the glory of kings to search it out. I believe discovering who God really is is the greatest treasure we can uncover in His Word. This is a life-changing, transforming discovery—one that can reshape everything we believe about God, about ourselves, and about the life before us.

Look at the opening two verses of Psalm 18. In just those few lines, David describes God as his strength, rock, fortress, deliverer, shield, and stronghold. So much revelation about God’s character in so little space!

As I kept reading, I began seeing these declarations throughout the Psalms: “The Lord is…” “God is…”

I came to see the Psalms as an extraordinary invitation to discover what I believe is the richest treasure in God’s Word: who God says He really is.

That matters because I believe the greatest battle over your life is what you believe about God—and what you believe God believes about you.

There is the voice of the accuser, and there is the voice of the Intercessor. The voice that pushes you away from God is never the voice of God. That is why spending time in His Word is such a tremendous investment: we are establishing God’s voice as the greatest voice in our lives.

For three to four months, I spent time every day in the Psalms, noting each attribute of God I found. When I encountered it again, I cross-referenced it. I kept the growing list on my phone.

Eventually, I sent those notes to my assistant, Phyllis Freeman, who helped me bring them together and consolidate them.

That daily study became the foundation for a book that has now been two years in the making:

David knew fear, grief, opposition, and failure. Yet throughout the Psalms, we see him returning to what he knew about God. I believe that knowledge was at the heart of his strength—and it is something we can grow in, too.

I believe this devotional has the potential to be one of the most valuable companions in your daily walk with God, because it centers on what I believe is the most important thing we can receive from His Word: the revelation of who He really is. When that truth takes root in us, it changes how we pray, how we face life’s battles, and how we see ourselves.

My prayer is that these 365 daily readings will help you see God as He really is and see yourself as God sees you.
