Day 6 of the 7-Day “Pick Up the Bible and Let the Bible Pick You Up” Reading Challenge
Welcome to Day 6! We’re almost through the whole challenge together. So far we’ve uncovered discerning God’s voice (Secret #1), the Bible as God’s voice of encouragement (Secret #2), the documented mental health benefits of Scripture engagement (Secret #3), the Bible as a book of transformation (Secret #4), and the Bible as a declaration of who God says you really are (Secret #5). Today’s secret is the one that ties them all together into an actual daily practice.
Here’s an excerpt from Pick Up the Bible and Let the Bible Pick You Up on Bible Reading Secret #6.
One Decision Changed Everything
One decision changed everything for me: I began starting every day in the Word of God. Earlier in this book, I shared how the Lord led me to make a decision that reshaped my life — to begin every day in the Word of God. Since I’ve already told that story, I won’t repeat it here. But I will say this:
That simple decision has become one of the most powerful spiritual investments of my life.
Over the years I’ve discovered something that continues to amaze me: most transformation in the Christian life does not happen through one dramatic moment. It happens through daily encounters with God’s Word that compound over time.
Craig Groeschel said, “It’s not what we do occasionally that makes the difference, it’s what we do consistently.”
Every time you open the Bible — even for a few minutes — you are making a deposit into your spiritual life. You may not feel the change immediately. But something is happening. The Word is shaping your thinking. Strengthening your faith. Revealing God’s character. Aligning your heart with His will. And when that happens day after day after day… the results become extraordinary.
The Compounding Power of God’s Word
In Atomic Habits, James Clear explains that small, consistent habits function like compound interest. Tiny actions repeated daily produce massive long-term results. The same is true spiritually.
One day in the Word may not feel life-changing. But 365 days in the Word absolutely are.
Jesus described this principle in Mark 4:24–25: “Pay close attention to what you hear. The closer you listen, the more understanding you will be given — and you will receive even more…” More understanding. More revelation. More clarity. Understanding grows through engagement. Revelation increases through consistency.
The Ice Cube Breakthrough
As we referenced earlier, James Clear gives the illustration of an ice cube in a room slowly warming. At 27 degrees — nothing happens. 28… nothing. 29… nothing. 30… still nothing. Then suddenly — 32 to 33 degrees — and everything changes. The ice melts.
The breakthrough didn’t come from one moment. It came from every moment leading up to it.
That is exactly how engaging daily with God’s Word works. You read one day. Then another. Then another. And it may feel like nothing is happening. But something is happening. Then one day — the Word explodes.
My Own Journey
This is exactly what happened in my life. For years, I simply showed up. I wasn’t chasing a breakthrough. I wasn’t trying to manufacture something spiritual. I was just opening the Bible… reading… listening… letting God speak. And over time, something shifted.
The Scriptures began to open in a deeper way. Connections became clearer. Revelation began to flow. It wasn’t sudden. It was compounded. All those small daily moments had been quietly building something powerful.
Desire → Discipline → Delight
One of the most important things I’ve learned in this journey is this:
A desire becomes a discipline — and a discipline becomes a delight.
At first, it was simply a decision. Then it became a commitment. Then it became something I look forward to more than almost anything else in my day. There is no greater place to start your day than in the Word of God. Not out of obligation… but out of anticipation.
The Greatest Atomic Habit Payback
There is no greater atomic habit payback than spending a little more time in the Word of God every day. Other habits improve parts of your life. But this one touches everything. It renews your thinking (Romans 12:2). It builds your faith (Romans 10:17). It anchors your life. It stabilizes your emotions. It reveals who God says He really is and who God says you really are.
The return on investment is enormous.
The Word of God Is Alive
This is why the Bible is unlike any other book. Hebrews 4:12 says, “The word of God is alive and powerful…” James writes in James 1:21, “…the word… has the power to save your souls.” And Paul says in 1 Thessalonians 2:13, “…the word of God… is at work in you who believe.”
The Word is not passive. It is working. Even when you don’t feel it.
Like Manna: God Designed the Word to Be Daily
This is not just a helpful habit. This is how God designed your life to function. From the very beginning, Scripture presents the Word of God as daily nourishment — not occasional inspiration.
Jesus taught us to pray in Matthew 6:11: “Give us today the food we need.” Daily bread. Your body needs daily food. Your spirit needs daily truth.
Day and Night: The Rhythm of Transformation
In Psalm 1:2: “They delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night.” And the result? A life that is stable. Fruitful. Consistent.
God gave the same instruction in Joshua 1:8: “Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night… Only then will you prosper and succeed…” Daily engagement is directly connected to transformation and success.
The Instruction to Kings and Leaders Like You
Scripture even gave this command to kings: “When he sits on the throne as king, he must copy for himself this body of instruction on a scroll in the presence of the Levitical priests. He must always keep that copy with him and read it daily as long as he lives. That way he will learn to fear the Lord his God by obeying all the terms of these instructions and decrees. This regular reading will prevent him from becoming proud and acting as if he is above his fellow citizens. It will also prevent him from turning away from these commands in the smallest way. And it will ensure that he and his descendants will reign for many generations in Israel.” — Deuteronomy 17:18-20
This wasn’t a suggestion — it was a command. In Deuteronomy 17:18–20, God commanded kings to keep the Word with them, read it every day, live by it continually. Why? So their hearts would stay humble… their lives aligned… their leadership grounded in truth.
God never designed His Word to be occasional. He designed it to be daily.
The Power of a Half Hour
A principle that has helped me is what Tommy Barnett calls “The Power of a Half Hour.” He writes: “Thirty minutes alone with God will change your life. Do it regularly, and you will be a new person… Follow this with another half-hour of Bible reading, prioritizing spiritual nourishment before engaging with worldly news… Reading the Bible is not a trivial activity but a sacred engagement with God’s Word.”
Thirty minutes a day may not seem dramatic. But over time: 3.5 hours a week… 15 hours a month… 180+ hours a year…
That is a massive investment!
Establishing the Greatest Voice in Your Life
Every day, you are being discipled by something. The world is full of voices. News. Social media. Opinions. Emotions. But none should replace the primary voice in your life: the Word of God.
Psalm 119:105: “Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.” When the Word becomes the dominant voice: your thinking becomes anchored, your faith becomes stronger, your decisions become clearer.
One simple tool that has helped me stay consistent is the YouVersion Bible app. It helps track daily reading and removes friction. But the tool is not the key. The key is the decision.
A 30-Minute Decision
Transformation doesn’t begin with complexity — it begins with a decision. So let me leave you with a simple invitation.
Make a decision. Not a complicated spiritual plan. Just a 30-minute decision. Give the first half hour of your day to the Lord. Before the news. Before the emails. Before the noise of the day. Open the Bible. Read slowly. Reflect on what God is saying. Let His promises speak into your life.
And then do it again tomorrow. And the next day. And the next.
Because those small daily moments with God’s Word will compound. And one day — just like the ice cube finally melting — you may discover that the Scriptures have opened to you in ways you never imagined. What once felt like a simple daily habit has become a life shaped by the voice of God.
Final Thought
This atomic habit — small, daily, consistent engagement with God’s Word — has done more for my walk with Christ than anything else. It has fed my future… and starved my fears. It has turned desire into discipline… and discipline into delight.
And it is available to you right now.
Pick up the Bible every day… and let the Bible pick you up.
Your Bible Reading Secret #6 Takeaway
Before you open your Bible today, carry this with you:
- Most transformation doesn’t happen through one dramatic moment — it happens through daily encounters with God’s Word that compound over time.
- A desire becomes a discipline, and a discipline becomes a delight. Consistency, not intensity, is what changes a life.
- God designed His Word to be daily — like manna, like daily bread, not occasional inspiration.
- Transformation doesn’t begin with complexity. It begins with a 30-minute decision to give the first part of your day to the Lord before the noise of the world gets there first.
