Do People in Heaven Know What Is Happening on the Earth?

One of the most common questions people ask about eternity is: “Do our loved ones in heaven know what is happening here on earth?” Scripture doesn’t give a single, all-encompassing verse that answers this directly, but it offers powerful glimpses. When we piece them together, a beautiful picture emerges: those in heaven are not cut off from earth; as part of God’s family, they share in His unfolding plan and are aware of what truly matters.

Surrounded by a Great Cloud of Witnesses

“Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.” (Hebrews 12:1, NKJV)

Hebrews 12 opens with the powerful reminder that believers are “surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses.” The writer wants his readers to grasp that the faithful men and women just described in Hebrews 11 — nearly twenty named individuals such as Abraham, Sarah, Moses, and David, along with countless unnamed others who “through faith subdued kingdoms, worked righteousness, obtained promises” (Hebrews 11:33) — now form a vast assembly encircling the people of God.

Their lives bear ongoing testimony to the faithfulness of the Lord, and the image is that of these witnesses filling the heavenly stands with innumerable others, urging us forward as we run our own race of faith.

The Greek word for cloud (nephos) pictures a vast multitude; witnesses (martys) are testifiers whose lives declare that God is faithful. These witnesses are not merely names in a book—they are alive in heaven, and their lives still “speak” to us (cf. Hebrews 11:4). The imagery evokes a stadium: as we run our race, they are the spectators who cheer us on. Their testimony—and the very fact that they finished—encourages us to live life with a heavenly mindset and give every day on this earth our very best – as we prepare for a glorious eternity.

Samuel and Saul: A Striking Example

In 1 Samuel 28, after Samuel had died, King Saul consulted the medium at Endor. Samuel appeared and declared Saul’s condition and the outcome of the imminent battle:

“Why do you ask me, seeing the LORD has departed from you and has become your enemy? … Moreover the LORD will also deliver Israel with you into the hand of the Philistines. And tomorrow you and your sons will be with me.” (1 Samuel 28:16, 19, NKJV)

Even after death, Samuel knew what was happening—and about to happen—on earth. His insight was not omniscience, but revelation from God, showing that the departed in the Lord can be given knowledge of earthly affairs.

Moses and Elijah with Jesus

On the Mount of Transfiguration, Moses and Elijah appeared with Jesus and spoke with Him about His approaching death in Jerusalem (Matthew 17:1–3; Luke 9:30–31). Men who had left the earth centuries earlier were fully aware of the climactic events about to unfold. Heaven is not disconnected from earth’s story—it is deeply invested in it.

Abraham, the Rich Man, and Lazarus

In Jesus’ account (Luke 16:19–31), Abraham converses with the rich man after death. Abraham recalls the man’s earthly life, his lack of mercy, and points to Moses and the prophets still ministering on earth. The scene shows memory, identity, and awareness of earthly realities in the afterlife.

The Martyrs Under the Altar

“I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain for the word of God… And they cried with a loud voice, saying, ‘How long, O Lord, holy and true, until You judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?’” (Revelation 6:9–10, NKJV)

The martyrs know that justice on earth has not yet come. They are aware that time is still unfolding and God’s purposes are still advancing.

Joy in Heaven When Sinners Repent

“There will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine just persons who need no repentance.” (Luke 15:7, NKJV; cf. v. 10)

Heaven rejoices when people turn to God—clear evidence of heavenly awareness of salvation decisions on earth.

One Family in Heaven and on Earth

“For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named.” (Ephesians 3:14–15, NKJV)

There is not a heavenly family and an earthly family—there is one family of God. If we are truly one household, it makes sense that the family in heaven is not oblivious to the life of the family on earth.

So, Do People in Heaven Know?

  • The saints in heaven are not omniscient—only God is all-knowing.
  • Yet God allows them to know certain things about earth, especially those tied to His redemptive plan.
  • They know when sinners repent (and rejoice), they remember their earthly lives, and at times they are given knowledge of present or future events.

In short, heaven is not disengaged from earth. Heaven is joyfully aware of the advance of God’s Kingdom—and those who have gone before us are part of the great cloud of witnesses, cheering us on as we run our race.

Encouragement for Us

  • You are not alone. You are surrounded by the testimony and encouragement of those who finished well.
  • Heaven rejoices with you when you obey God and when others come to Christ.
  • Your loved ones in the Lord are part of God’s one family in heaven and earth, still connected to His purposes.

So, lay aside every weight. Keep your eyes on Jesus. Run with endurance. Remember—you are being cheered on by a great cloud of witnesses who testify that God is faithful and the finish line is worth it.

The Greatest Thing You Can Do for Your Loved Ones in Heaven

The greatest thing you could ever do to encourage your loved ones in heaven is to make sure you will be ready to join them. Many people who have died and been brought back have testified that their loved ones were there near the gates of heaven to welcome them. What a day of rejoicing that will be—welcomed by Jesus, and embraced by those who have gone before you.

Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live.” (John 11:25, NKJV)

You do not have to wonder where you will spend eternity. You can have assurance today by receiving the gift of eternal life Jesus freely offers.

A Prayer to Receive Eternal Life

If you’re ready to settle this, pray from your heart:

“Lord Jesus, I believe You are the Son of God. I believe You died for my sins and rose again. Today I turn from my sin and put my trust in You. Come into my heart, forgive me, and make me new. I receive the gift of eternal life. From this day forward, I will follow You. Thank You for saving me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

“For ‘whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.’” (Romans 10:13, NKJV)

Congratulations! If you prayed that prayer, welcome to God’s family. What a glorious day it will be when we are reunited with those we love who have gone before—but most of all when we see Jesus face to face and live with Him forever.
