God Is the Lifter of Your Head!

Lift Your Head! God Is Your Glory, Psalm 3:3

Day 5 of our seven-part journey through The God That David Knew, adapted from the book’s Day 45.

Have you ever felt so discouraged that even lifting your head seemed difficult? Shame, disappointment, grief, and rejection can make us want to look down and withdraw. But David discovered something about God that I want you to hold on to today: God is the lifter of your head!

“But you, O Lord, are a shield around me; you are my glory, the one who holds my head high.” — Psalm 3:3, NLT

David’s confidence wasn’t in his crown

Psalm 3 is David’s prayer while fleeing from his son Absalom. This was no comfortable moment of reflection. His own son had risen against him, and David was leaving Jerusalem in sorrow. Second Samuel 15:30 describes him walking up the Mount of Olives, weeping, his head covered, and his feet bare.

Head covered. Weeping. Barefoot. Humiliated.

Yet David could still say to God, “You are my glory.” His glory wasn’t his crown or his throne. Those could be taken away. His glory was God Himself—and no one could take that away!

That matters when something you have counted on is shaken. A position can change. Someone’s opinion can change. A relationship can bring deep pain. But none of those things has the authority to define God’s heart toward you.

The lifter of my head

Older translations describe the Lord as “the lifter of mine head” (Psalm 3:3, KJV). What a tender picture! God does not stand at a distance demanding that a discouraged person try harder to look confident. He comes near to strengthen and restore.

In Luke 13:10–17, Jesus met a woman who had been bent over for eighteen years and could not straighten herself. He called her forward and laid His hands on her. “Instantly she could stand straight. How she praised God!” (Luke 13:13, NLT).

This was a real act of healing, and it also reveals the compassionate heart of the One we are learning to know. Jesus saw her. He called her. He helped her stand. Her years of suffering had not made her invisible to Him.

Whatever has bowed your head today, bring it to Him. You do not have to pretend the hurt is small. God’s encouragement does not require you to deny your grief.

Jesus lifts you up to be who He calls you to be

Insecure leaders use fear, intimidation, and confusion to make themselves seem stronger. Their words make people feel smaller. Jesus is different. He never needs to tear you down to build Himself up. He lifts you up to be who He calls you to be!

That is one reason what you believe about God matters so deeply. If you imagine Him always looking for a reason to reject you, you will hesitate to come near. But when you discover His heart in Scripture, you begin to approach Him with confidence.

This does not mean life becomes free of hardship. David’s prayer came in the middle of trouble. God was his shield and his glory there, before all the circumstances had changed.

If today is especially painful, I also hope yesterday’s message, The God of All Comfort Is Close Beside You!, will encourage you. His comfort and His restoring strength belong to the same loving heart.

A simple response for today

Take a quiet moment with Psalm 3:3. Name the disappointment, shame, or fear that has been weighing on you. Then read the verse aloud, slowly. Let God’s description of Himself become more important than the accusation or discouragement you have been rehearsing.

Ask Him for strength to take one faithful step today: return a call, finish a responsibility, ask for help, or spend a few unhurried minutes in His Word. Lifting your head does not mean you have to solve everything at once.

Let’s pray

Father, thank You for being my shield, my glory, and the lifter of my head. You see what has hurt me and what has made me want to withdraw. Help me receive Your love and strength today. Remind me that my worth is not held in a title, someone’s approval, or a circumstance. Teach me to look to You and walk forward with confidence in Your heart. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Today’s declaration

God is my glory and the lifter of my head! Shame, grief, and failure cannot keep my head down. He lifts me up to be who He calls me to be, and I stand tall and look up today!
