I Asked ChatGPT, ‘If You Were the Devil, What Would You Do?’ — The Answer Might Surprise You!

If you were the devil, what would you do? A reflection on distraction, identity, and the power of God's Word.

This morning, I asked ChatGPT a simple but revealing question:

“If you were the devil, what would you do?”

Some reading this may not be familiar with what ChatGPT or artificial intelligence really is. In simple terms, it has access to massive amounts of information and can scan in seconds what would take humans years to study. So in a way, asking this question was like tapping into the collected insights of countless thinkers, writers, and observers across history—all at once.

What I got was eye-opening.

And even more interesting—when I held it up next to Scripture, it lined up in ways that made me pause.

The Answer Wasn’t What I Expected

I assumed the response might focus on obvious temptation or the loud, destructive stuff we all recognize—things like scandal, addiction, or outright rebellion.

Instead, it focused on the subtle stuff.

Here’s the heart of what came back:

  • Keep you out of the Word.
  • Keep you busy, not broken.
  • Whisper lies about your identity.
  • Magnify problems and minimize God.
  • Isolate you from encouragement and community.
  • Distract you with “good things” instead of God things.

In other words…

Not destruction through explosion.
Destruction through distraction.

Not defeat through scandal.
Defeat through silence.

Not attack through storms.
Attack through neglect.

And that’s honestly how the enemy has worked from the beginning—quietly, patiently, subtly, strategically.

The Real Battle Is Over What You Believe

Here’s one of the greatest truths I’ve learned in my life:

Your greatest battle over your life is not your circumstances.
The greatest battle over your life is what you believe about God—and what you believe God believes about you!

If the enemy can distort how you see God, how you see yourself, and how you see your future, he can weaken your faith without ever changing your circumstances.

And here’s why that matters:

What you believe about God will either attract you to Him—or repel you from Him.

That’s why lies are his favorite weapon.

And truth is your greatest defense.

There Are Two Voices Speaking Over Your Life

There are two voices speaking over your life:

  • The voice of the accuser—pushing shame, fear, condemnation, and the constant reminder of your failures.
  • The voice of the Intercessor—Jesus, who is for you and is praying for you.

One of the greatest things I’ve ever discovered through reading the Word of God is this:

As a believer, the voice that pushes you away from God is never the voice of God!

God’s voice draws you closer. The accuser’s voice pushes you away.

Why the Word Matters More Than Ever

Here’s what I have discovered:

Because God and His word are one, the greatest investment you can make in your life is spending time in the Word of God—and establishing the voice of God as the greatest voice in your life.

Above:

  • every fear
  • every failure
  • every accusation
  • every insecurity
  • social media
  • news
  • opinions

Because whatever voice is loudest will be strongest.

And whatever is strongest will shape your life.

A.W. Tozer Was Right

A.W. Tozer once said:

“Satan’s greatest weapon against mankind is ignorance of the Word of God.”

That is so true because the Bible isn’t just a book of rules.

It’s a declaration of who God says He really is… and who God says you really are.

It’s a revelation of His heart, His nature, His promises, and His ways.

So What Do We Do With This?

Let me make this very practical and very personal.

About eight years ago, I felt the Lord gently ask me a simple question:

“What would you think about not starting another day without first spending time in My Word?”

It wasn’t a command.
It wasn’t condemnation.
It was an invitation.

At first, it was just a desire.

Then, by God’s grace, that desire became a discipline.

And over time, that discipline became a delight.

Not because I’m perfect—but because God is faithful.

How the Word Changed My Thinking

One of the greatest changes I’ve experienced in my life hasn’t been external.

It’s been internal.

It’s how I think.

“Let God transform you by changing the way you think.”
— Romans 12:2 (NLT)

That’s exactly what the Word does.

It reshapes your perspective.
It renews your confidence.
It redefines your identity.

Dr. David Jeremiah once said:

“The greatest source of good thoughts is the Word of God.”

And that’s so true.

If you want to change how you think… change what you’re feeding on.

Learning to See Yourself the Way God Does

Spending time in Scripture has helped me discover something powerful:

God’s thoughts about me are higher than my thoughts about myself.

And His thoughts are kinder.
Stronger.
More hopeful.

Psalm 139 tells us that God’s thoughts toward us are precious and numerous.

When you read the Bible, you’re not just learning theology—you’re learning how God sees you.

You’re learning what He believes about you.

And that changes everything.

It’s Not About Being Religious. It’s About Being Rooted.

This isn’t about checking a spiritual box.

It’s about building a life—rooted in truth, grounded in grace, anchored in identity.

When God’s Word becomes your daily voice, every other voice gets quieter.

Fear gets quieter.
Condemnation gets quieter.
Doubt gets quieter.

And faith gets stronger.

Jesus Taught This Principle

Jesus said something that perfectly captures why “hearing” and “receiving” the Word matters so much:

“Pay close attention to what you hear. The closer you listen, the more understanding you will be given… To those who listen to my teaching, more understanding will be given.”
— Mark 4:24–25 (NLT)

That’s powerful.

Jesus is showing us a spiritual reality:

The more you receive God’s Word, the more you’ll understand it.
And the more you read it… the more you’ll want it. The greatest atomic habit in all the world is meditating in God’s word!

Let’s Pray

Father,

Give us a fresh hunger and revelation of Your Word. Silence every false voice. Strengthen us with truth. Renew our minds. Restore our confidence. And help us establish a daily time in your word and walk in victory.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
