Some of the most world-changing moments in Scripture didn’t happen on a platform or in a palace. They happened quietly—through the obedience of someone trusted with an assignment.
And that’s exactly what this series is about: Number Twos That Changed the World.
One of the greatest examples is Abraham’s servant, traditionally understood to be Eliezer of Damascus—the unnamed number two whose faithfulness secured the future of God’s covenant.
He didn’t part a sea.
He didn’t preach a sermon.
He didn’t receive a promise directly from God.
Yet his obedience shaped the lineage through which Jesus Himself would come.
Trusted With the Most Important Assignment
Abraham was advanced in years, and God’s covenant promise depended on Isaac having a wife—but not just any wife.
“You will go to my country and my own relatives and get a wife for my son Isaac.”
— Genesis 24:4
Abraham didn’t send Isaac.
He didn’t send a committee.
He sent his servant—his number two.
Why?
Because Abraham trusted this man’s character, faith, and discretion.
Number twos are often entrusted with assignments that are far bigger than they appear.
The Classic Number Two Prayer
Before Abraham’s servant ever spoke to Rebekah, he spoke to God.
And his prayer reveals the heart of a true servant.
“O LORD, God of my master Abraham, please grant me success today, and show steadfast love to my master Abraham.”
— Genesis 24:12
Notice what he did not pray:
- He didn’t pray for credit
- He didn’t pray for safety
- He didn’t pray for promotion
He prayed for success in fulfilling someone else’s vision.
This is the classic number two prayer:
“Lord, help me succeed—not for my name, but for the mission I serve.”
I can’t read that prayer without thinking about my own journey of serving Dr. Morris Cerullo. I prayed this prayer many times over the years—quietly, before meetings, before events, before decisions big and small.
“Lord, help me be successful in serving the vision You placed on this man’s life.”
And I’ve seen God answer that prayer—again and again…
Faith Expressed Through Action
Abraham’s servant didn’t just pray—he paid attention.
Before he finished praying, Rebekah appeared.
“Before he had finished speaking, behold, Rebekah came out…”
— Genesis 24:15
And when she did exactly what he had prayed for—offering water not only to him, but to his camels—the servant knew God was at work.
“The man bowed his head and worshiped the LORD.”
— Genesis 24:26
That’s another mark of a faithful number two:
- They recognize God’s hand quickly
- They respond with worship, and are genuinely excited to see the vision succeed
Faithfulness in Private Produces Public Impact
The servant carefully explained his mission to Rebekah’s family—not embellishing, not manipulating, not rushing.
“I will not eat until I have told my errand.”
— Genesis 24:33
He stayed focused on the assignment.
Because of that:
- Isaac received a godly wife
- The covenant line continued
- Jacob was born
- Israel emerged
- And ultimately, Christ came into the world
All because a servant prayed, listened, and obeyed.
The Power of an Unnamed World Changer
Scripture never records this servant’s speech beyond this chapter.
His name fades into the background.
But his impact echoes through eternity.
That’s the paradox of number twos:
They often remain unseen—yet they shape much that follows.
A Word for Today’s Number Twos
If you’re serving someone else’s vision…
If you’re helping build something you may never lead…
If your faithfulness feels hidden…
Take heart.
God entrusts futures to servants who know how to pray the right prayers.
“Well done, good and faithful servant.”
— Matthew 25:21
Closing Prayer
Father, I thank You for every person reading this who is faithfully serving behind the scenes.
Teach us to pray like Abraham’s servant—to seek Your guidance, honor the mission You’ve given us, and serve with humility without needing the spotlight. Give us wisdom, discretion, courage, and joy in the assignment. Let our obedience shape generations we may never see.
And Lord, I ask You to bless every “number two” today. Strengthen their hands. Refresh their heart. Remind them that You see what others don’t see, and that nothing done in faithfulness is ever wasted.
And Father, I also pray for leaders and vision-carriers: send them the right people—faithful servants with pure hearts, strong character, and steady hands. Give them “Abraham’s servants”—trusted helpers who will protect the mission, carry the load, and help ensure that what You’ve promised actually comes to pass.
We ask it in Jesus’ name, Amen.
