Jesus Said Your Only Job Is To STAY CONNECTED: 8 Great Ways To Strengthen Your Connection With The Lord!

Jesus never told His disciples to focus on producing fruit.

He never said, “Try harder.”

He never said, “Work harder.”

He never said, “Become more fruitful.”

Instead, He gave them one simple command:

“Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me.”
John 15:4 NLT

The branch has only one responsibility: stay connected to the vine.

The vine supplies the life.

The vine supplies the nourishment.

The vine produces the fruit.

Many Christians spend their lives frustrated because they are trying to manufacture what only God can produce. They are striving for peace, striving for joy, striving for holiness, striving for victory.

Jesus offers a different path.

Abide.

Remain.

Stay connected.

The Greek word Jesus used is meno, which means “to remain,” “to stay,” “to dwell,” or “to make your home in.”

The Christian life is not about earning fruitfulness. It is about abiding in Christ. When we remain connected to Him, the fruit comes naturally.

Here are eight practical ways to stay connected to the Lord.

1. Stay Connected to God’s Word

“If you remain in me and my words remain in you…”
John 15:7 NLT

Notice that Jesus did not simply say, “Remain in Me.” He immediately connected remaining in Him with His words remaining in us.

Why?

Because God’s Word is one of the primary ways Jesus remains active in our lives today.

“In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
John 1:1 NLT

God and His Word are inseparable.

The Bible is not merely a book about God. The Bible is God’s self-revelation. Through its pages we discover who God says He really is and who God says we really are.

One of the greatest battles of your life will always be over what you believe about God and what you believe God believes about you.

God’s Word settles both questions.

The Bible reveals that God is not distant, angry, reluctant, or looking for reasons to reject us. It reveals a Father who runs toward prodigals, a Shepherd who searches for lost sheep, and a Savior who willingly laid down His life for us.

God’s Word also reveals our true identity. It tells us that we are forgiven, accepted, redeemed, loved, chosen, and complete in Christ.

This is why I often say:

“The Bible is a declaration of who God says He really is and who God says you really are.”

Many believers approach Bible reading as a duty.

Jesus intended it to be a relationship.

The goal is not simply to get through the Bible.

The goal is for the Bible to get through to us.

That is why I love to tell people:

“Pick up the Bible—and let the Bible pick you up!”

When you are discouraged, God’s Word picks you up.

When you are confused, God’s Word picks you up.

When you are grieving, God’s Word picks you up.

When you are tempted, God’s Word picks you up.

When you are afraid, God’s Word picks you up.

The Apostle Paul wrote:

“And we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as a human word, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is indeed at work in you who believe.”
1 Thessalonians 2:13 NIV

Notice those last words:

“At work in you.”

God’s Word is not passive.

God’s Word works.

While you are reading it, it is reading you.

While you are studying it, it is transforming you.

While you are meditating on it, it is renewing your mind.

Hebrews says the Word of God is living and powerful. Isaiah says God’s Word never returns void. Paul says faith comes by hearing the Word of God.

No other book can make those claims.

Every day you spend in Scripture is another day connected to the Vine.

The Word reveals God’s character.

The Word reveals God’s will.

The Word reveals God’s promises.

The Word renews your thinking.

The Word strengthens your faith.

The Word aligns your heart with Heaven.

And perhaps most importantly, the Word continually points you back to Jesus.

If you want to stay connected to the Lord, start by staying connected to His Word.

Pick up the Bible.

And let the Bible pick you up.

2. Remember How Much God Loves You

Many believers focus on increasing their love for God. 1 John 4:19 says: “We love Him because He first loved us.” (NKJV)

Your love for God will never rise higher than your revelation of God’s love for you!

Jesus focused on God’s love for them.

“I have loved you even as the Father has loved me. Remain in my love.”
John 15:9 NLT

The strength of your Christian life is not found in how tightly you hold onto God.

It is found in how securely God holds onto you.

When you remember His love, fear loses its grip.

Shame loses its grip.

Condemnation loses its grip.

The more convinced you become that God is for you, the easier it becomes to remain close to Him.

There are two voices that will try to speak over your life: the accuser and the Intercessor.

The voice that pushes you away from God is never the voice of God.

The Holy Spirit will convict you, but He will never condemn you. He will correct you, but He will never reject you. He will draw you back to the Father, not drive you away from Him.

Remain in His love.

Live from His love.

Let His love be the atmosphere of your spiritual life.

3. Keep a Short Account with God

One of the enemy’s favorite strategies is to convince believers to run from God after they fail.

The Holy Spirit always invites us to run toward Him.

When you sin, confess it quickly.

Receive God’s forgiveness quickly.

Don’t allow guilt to build a wall between you and the Lord.

“But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.”
1 John 1:9 NLT

The longer we carry unconfessed sin, the more distant we feel from God.

Not because He has moved.

Because we have.

Keep the account short.

Stay close.

Do not let yesterday’s failure become today’s distance.

Confession is not God’s way of humiliating you. It is God’s way of restoring fellowship, cleansing your heart, and keeping you near.

4. Let Prayer Flow from Relationship

Prayer is not a religious duty. Prayer is not an obligation, prayer is an opportunity.

In Psalms 42:2 David didn’t ask “When do I have to pray?” He asked, “When do I get to pray!”

“I thirst for God, the living God. When can I go and stand before him?”

It is the natural conversation of a connected heart.

Jesus said:

“But if you remain in me and my words remain in you, you may ask for anything you want, and it will be granted!”
John 15:7 NLT

Notice the order.

Abiding comes first.

The Word comes first.

Then asking.

You cannot really pray with confidence if you do not know the character of God, the will of God, and the promises of God.

God’s Word reveals His will.

God’s Word reveals His character.

God’s Word reveals His heart.

Faith begins where the will of God is known.

The more time we spend in His Word, the more naturally prayer flows. Prayer stops becoming a religious exercise and starts becoming a conversation with Someone you know and trust.

When God’s Word abides in you, your prayers begin to align with Heaven.

5. Depend on the Holy Spirit

Jesus did not leave us to figure out the Christian life on our own.

The Holy Spirit was given to help us remain connected to Christ.

He comforts us.

He guides us.

He convicts us.

He strengthens us.

He reminds us of God’s promises.

Jesus said:

“But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—He will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.”
John 14:26 NLT

The Holy Spirit continually turns our attention back to Jesus.

When you feel weak, lean into the Helper.

That is exactly why He came.

You are not called to live the Christian life in your own strength.

Paul wrote:

“For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him.”
Philippians 2:13 NLT

That is such an important truth.

Our job is not to do God’s work in our own strength.

Our job is to stay connected to the One who works in us both to will and to do of His good pleasure.

6. Obey the Promptings of God

Jesus said:

“When you obey my commandments, you remain in my love…”
John 15:10 NLT

Obedience is not a way to earn God’s favor.

It is a way to walk in fellowship with Him.

Every act of obedience strengthens the connection.

Every act of surrender deepens the relationship.

When God speaks, respond quickly.

Delayed obedience often becomes disobedience.

Sometimes staying connected to Jesus is as simple as saying yes to the last thing He told you to do.

Obedience keeps your heart tender.

Obedience keeps your ears open.

Obedience keeps your life aligned with the flow of the Vine.

7. Stay Connected to God’s People

Branches were never designed to grow alone.

God created us for fellowship, encouragement, worship, accountability, and community.

One of the quickest ways to drift spiritually is to become isolated.

“And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another…”
Hebrews 10:25 NLT

Stay planted in a Bible-believing church.

Stay connected to believers who encourage your walk with Christ.

Stay close to people who pull you toward Jesus, not away from Him.

God often strengthens us through the people He places around us.

You need people who will pray with you, speak truth to you, remind you of God’s promises, and help you keep your eyes on Jesus.

8. Focus on Abiding, Not Producing

This may be the most important lesson of all.

Many believers spend their lives obsessed with becoming what God says they should be.

Jesus tells us to focus somewhere else.

Remain.

Abide.

Stay connected.

The fruit is God’s responsibility.

The connection is ours.

I posted this thought a few weeks ago:

Don’t beat yourself up trying to become what God says you already are. Jesus told His disciples, “You are already pruned and purified by the message I have given you.”

The focus is not on earning fruitfulness—it’s on abiding. Stay connected to the Vine, and the fruit will come.

That is the secret.

The branch never strains to produce grapes.

It simply remains attached to the vine.

The same is true for us.

As I grow older, my prayer is becoming simpler.

I don’t want to drift.

I don’t want to become independent.

I don’t want to forget the One who has been faithful every step of the journey.

When I read the Old Testament and see how easily people drifted after God blessed them, it breaks my heart. I never want that to be my story.

The more God blesses me, the closer I want to be to Him.

The more God helps me, the more grateful I want to become.

The more God uses me, the more dependent I want to remain.

I want to finish my life closer to Jesus than ever before.

Not on a decline.

On an incline.

More grateful.

More dependent.

More connected.

Because at the end of the day, the goal is not fruit.

The goal is Jesus.

And when we stay connected to Him, the fruit will always follow.

A Prayer to Stay Connected to the Lord

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for sending Jesus, the true Vine, and for inviting me into a relationship with You.

Help me to remain in Christ each day. Keep my heart tender toward Your voice and sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit. Draw me continually into Your Word, and let Your Word dwell richly within me.

Lord, when I stumble, remind me to run toward You instead of away from You. Help me to keep a short account with You and to rest in the assurance of Your love and forgiveness.

Teach me to trust You more deeply, obey You more quickly, and depend upon You more completely. May I never become so busy producing fruit that I forget the One who produces it.

I pray that as I stay connected to Jesus, Your life would flow through me, Your character would be formed in me, and Your fruit would be evident through me.

My desire is simple: I want to finish my life closer to You than ever before. I want to love You more, trust You more, and walk with You more intimately with each passing year.

Thank You that I do not have to strive to become what You have already declared me to be. Help me simply to abide in Christ and trust You for the fruit.
