Why God Will Never Ask You to Give What He Hasn’t First Given You
One of the greatest kingdom secrets hidden in plain sight is this: God will never ask you to give what He has not first given to you.
Many believers spend their lives striving to become what only God can make them. They try harder to love. Try harder to forgive. Try harder to show mercy. Try harder to be strong. Try harder to be fruitful.
But Jesus revealed a completely different pattern for spiritual breakthrough and kingdom living.
“I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing.”
John 15:5 NLT
Notice what Jesus did not say. He did not say, “I am the vine, you are the branches, now go out and produce fruit in your own strength.”
No. The branch has one primary responsibility: remain connected to the vine.
The fruit is not produced by striving. The fruit is produced by abiding. The life of the vine flows into the branch, and then fruit flows from the branch.
That is how the Kingdom of God works.
Before God can use your life in a greater way, He first wants to infuse your life in a greater way.
You cannot pour out what has not first been poured in. You cannot impart what you do not possess. You cannot give away what you have never received.
The Christian life is not about striving harder. It is about receiving more deeply and overflowing more freely.
Here are 10 things God wants you to receive before you can give them away.
1. Receive God’s Love Before You Give Love
“We love each other because he loved us first.”
1 John 4:19 NLT
The Christian life does not begin with our love for God. It begins with His love for us.
God is not asking you to manufacture love out of the emptiness of your own heart. He invites you to receive His love until His love begins to overflow through your life.
The loved become loving.
2. Receive God’s Mercy Before You Show Mercy
“God blesses those who are merciful, for they will be shown mercy.”
Matthew 5:7 NLT
Merciful people are not people who have never needed mercy. Merciful people are those who know how much mercy they have received.
When the mercy of God touches your heart, it changes how you see others. You become slower to judge, quicker to forgive, and more willing to extend compassion.
The recipients of mercy become vessels of mercy.
3. Receive God’s Forgiveness Before You Forgive Others
“Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.”
Ephesians 4:32 NLT
Forgiveness does not begin by looking at the offense committed against you. It begins by looking at the cross and remembering the debt Jesus canceled for you.
The more deeply we receive God’s forgiveness, the more freely we can release forgiveness to others.
The forgiven become forgiving.
4. Receive God’s Comfort Before You Comfort Others
“He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others.”
2 Corinthians 1:4 NLT
God never wastes a pain that He has healed.
There are places in your life where God has met you, strengthened you, carried you, and comforted you. And often, those very places become the place from which you are able to comfort others.
The comforted become comforters.
5. Receive God’s Grace Before You Extend Grace
“From his abundance we have all received one gracious blessing after another.”
John 1:16 NLT
Grace is not just what saves us. Grace is what sustains us.
When you understand how gracious God has been to you, you become more gracious with others. You stop demanding perfection from people because you know God did not demand perfection from you before He loved you.
The graced become gracious.
6. Receive God’s Peace Before You Bring Peace
“I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give.”
John 14:27 NLT
You cannot bring peace into an atmosphere if you are not first receiving peace in your own heart.
Jesus does not merely command peace. He gives peace. His peace is not based on perfect circumstances. His peace is rooted in His presence.
The peaceful become peacemakers.
7. Receive God’s Generosity Before You Become Generous
“Freely you have received; freely give.”
Matthew 10:8 NIV
Everything we have is a gift from God. Our life, our salvation, our breath, our strength, our provision, our opportunities, and our eternal hope all come from Him.
Generosity is not born from pressure. It is born from gratitude.
When you realize how much God has given to you, it becomes a joy to allow His generosity to flow through you.
The blessed become a blessing.
8. Receive God’s Strength Before You Strengthen Others
“Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.”
Ephesians 6:10 NLT
God never intended you to serve Him from the limitations of your own strength.
There is a strength that comes from the Lord. There is a power that is made perfect in weakness. There is a supernatural supply for every assignment God gives.
Before you strengthen others, let Him strengthen you.
The strengthened become strengtheners.
9. Receive God’s Word Before You Share God’s Word
“Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives.”
Colossians 3:16 NLT
God’s Word must first dwell richly in us before it can flow powerfully through us.
The Bible is not just information to be shared. It is revelation to be received. It is life. It is bread. It is seed. It is light. It is the declaration of who God says He really is and who God says you really are.
The nourished become nourishers.
10. Receive the Holy Spirit Before You Impact the World
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses…”
Acts 1:8 NLT
Jesus did not tell His disciples to go change the world in their own ability. He told them to wait until they received power from on high.
First came the infilling. Then came the outpouring.
First came the power. Then came the witness.
First they received. Then they released.
The filled become fruitful.
The Kingdom Secret of Overflow
This is the divine order of the Christian life:
Receive. Abide. Overflow.
Love received becomes love given.
Mercy received becomes mercy shown.
Forgiveness received becomes forgiveness extended.
Comfort received becomes comfort shared.
Grace received becomes grace offered.
Peace received becomes peace imparted.
Generosity received becomes generosity expressed.
Strength received becomes strength supplied.
Truth received becomes truth proclaimed.
Power received becomes ministry released.
The greatest battle in your life is often not learning how to give more. It is learning how to receive more from God.
Jesus said, “I am the vine; you are the branches.” The branch does not struggle to bear fruit. It simply remains connected to the source.
When the life of the vine flows in, the fruit of the vine flows out.
That is not just a ministry principle. That is a spiritual breakthrough. That is a kingdom secret.
Before God can use your life in a greater way, He first wants to infuse your life in a greater way.
A Prayer to Receive and Overflow
Father, in the name of Jesus, I thank You that You never ask me to give what You have not first given to me.
Today, I open my heart to receive more of Your love, Your mercy, Your forgiveness, Your comfort, Your grace, Your peace, Your strength, Your Word, and the power of Your Holy Spirit.
Teach me to stop striving and start abiding. Teach me to live connected to Jesus, the true Vine. Let Your life flow into me so that Your fruit can flow through me.
Use my life as an overflow of what I have received from You. Make me a vessel of Your love, mercy, grace, and power to the people around me.
Before You use me in a greater way, infuse me in a greater way.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
