Take Along Extra Oil! 3 Keys to the Parable of the Wise and Foolish Virgins

“Then the Kingdom of Heaven will be like ten bridesmaids who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. The five who were foolish didn’t take enough olive oil for their lamps, but THE OTHER FIVE WERE WISE ENOUGH TO TAKE ALONG EXTRA OIL
— Matthew 25:1-4 (NLT)

In this prophetic parable, Jesus shows us that time spent feeding your spiritual life is never wasted.

Only the lack of it leaves us unready when it matters the most.

Let’s break it down:

1. Your Lamp Is Your Spiritual Life

“The spirit of a man is the lamp of the Lord, searching all the inner depths of his heart.”
— Proverbs 20:27 (NKJV)

Your lamp is your spiritual life — the part of you that will live forever.

The Bible teaches us that we are triune beings: we are a spirit, who has a soul, and lives in a body.

As much as we spend time feeding and caring for our bodies, or educating and entertaining our minds, this parable is a wake-up call to tend to what matters most. Our spirit is the part of us that is eternal — it is where we engage with God and it requires investment, nourishment, and priority!

2. Your Oil Is What Feeds Your Spiritual Life

Jesus said the wise took oil in their vessels. Oil is what fuels your spiritual life. It’s what keeps you spiritually alive, connected, alert, and overflowing. Are you making it a daily goal to feed the moat important part of your life?

This parable teaches that you and I can’t borrow someone else’s oil. Nor can we live on yesterday’s encounter.

Our prayer should be “Give us this day our DAILY bread!”

Your spirit is craving a fresh, daily supply of what fuels your relationship with God.

In just a minute I will share 13 ways the Bible encourages you to quickly and easily supercharge your spiritual life…so that you are not just scraping by – but like the wise virgins – carrying extra oil every day!

3. The Power Secret Of Taking Along Extra Oil!

Time with God is never wasted. Only the lack of it leaves us unready when it matters most.

When the Bridegroom came, only those with extra oil were ready. The foolish were distracted, delayed, and ultimately shut out. The point is simple: don’t just coast in your spiritual life—intentionally invest in it.

If you’re going to make a mistake, make it on the side of praying too much, giving too much, and preaching the gospel too often. Your future self will thank you. Heaven and earth will reward you.

💭 Does This Parable Mean 50% of Believers Won’t Make It?

This is a common question, and it’s important to answer it clearly: Jesus was not giving a statistical prediction in this parable—He was giving a spiritual warning.

The number “five wise” and “five foolish” virgins is symbolic, not statistical. Jesus didn’t say half of all Christians will miss heaven. What He did say is that 100% of those who are feeding their daily relationship with Him when He returns will go to heaven! The message isn’t about percentages—it’s about preparation.

Jesus finishes the parable with this charge:

“So you, too, must keep watch! For you do not know the day or hour of my return.”
— Matthew 25:13 (NLT)

🔥 13 Biblical Ways to Keep Your Lamp Full

Each of these is a way to carry “extra oil” in your spiritual life—practices that fill your heart with God’s presence, power, and joy:

  1. Meditating on the Word of God

  2. Prayer and Intimacy with God
“The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power…” — James 5:16 Power doesn’t travel through words. Power travels through relationship.
  3. Worship
“God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and in truth.” — John 4:24 “In Your presence is fullness of joy.” — Psalm 16:11
  4. Pleasing the Holy Spirit (Not Quenching or Grieving Him)
“Be filled with the Holy Spirit.” — Ephesians 5:18

  13. Witnessing / Sharing Your Faith
“You will receive power… and you will be my witnesses.” — Acts 1:8

🔥 Worship: A Power Source of Oil

Worship is more than music—it’s a supernatural exchange where heaven fills you with fresh fire…There is power in establishing a daily lifestyle of worship:

  • Solomon’s Temple: The glory filled the house (1 Kings 8:10–11)
  • Paul and Silas: Worship broke chains and opened prison doors (Acts 16:25–26)
  • Isaiah’s Vision: Worship brought cleansing and calling (Isaiah 6:1–7)
  • Jehoshaphat’s Army: Worship won the war (2 Chronicles 20:21–22)
  • Pentecost: Unified worship invited the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:1–4)
  • The Alabaster Jar: Her worship moved the heart of Jesus (Mark 14:3–9)

🔥 Witnessing: The Secret to Increasing What You’ve Got

After the parable of the ten virgins, Jesus immediately tells the parable of the talents. The message? Use what God gave you—or lose it.

The servant with one talent didn’t steal, lie, or sin—but he did nothing with what God gave him. And for that, he lost even what he had. Jesus is teaching us that one of the greatest ways to stay spiritually full is to share what God gives you. The fire grows when you pass it on. Witnessing, teaching, preaching, writing, dreaming, and launching new ways to get the gospel out are not just good ideas—they’re how you keep your lamp full.

🔥 You Either Got Better Today or You Got Worse

When our son Josh played football at Stanford, Coach Jim Harbaugh hung a big banner out at the practice field that said: “You either got better today or you got worse—but you didn’t stay the same.”

The same is true spiritually. Growth is a daily decision. Fill your lamp. Store extra oil. And remember—when the shout goes out, “The Bridegroom is coming!”—no one can lay hands on you and give you their preparation. You can’t receive an impartation of their prayer life, their time in the Word, or their intimacy with God. There is no greater decision you or I can make than to go past the point of convenience in our relationship with God and rising up into what the Bible encourages us in Hebrews 11:6 – seeking God with diligence and stepping into His reward – extra oil!

— Matthew 25:29 (NLT)

You can’t feed your fear and your future at the same time, and you are feeding one or the other!

If you’re ready to choose significance over success — reward over lack — movement over stagnation — a future greater than your fears — and to win the battle over what you believe about God and what God believes about you… then this is for you!
