Your Mistakes Do Not Disqualify You From What God Alone Has Qualified You For!

Note: The following is an expanded introduction and excerpt from Chapter 3 of my brand-new revised edition of Your Promotion Is In Motion: Seven Words From Heaven That Will Shift You From The Sidelines To Success And From Success To Significance.

What you’re about to read is one of the most personal and hope-filled messages in this book. I’ve walked with people—and lived through seasons myself—where it felt like a single failure or wrong decision might have disqualified me from the future God promised. But I’ve discovered something life-changing: God never stops believing in His plan for you, even when you stop believing in yourself.

God is not looking for reasons to shorten or sideline your destiny. He is searching for ways to fulfill it. Your setback is not God setting you aside—it’s His setup for your comeback. That truth became real to me in a moment I’ll never forget.

A Cold Reception

I remember sitting at a cold conference-room table in Birmingham, England, in 1989. It was my first-ever citywide pastors’ meeting, representing Dr. Morris Cerullo. About fifty conservative British pastors filled the room. My goal was simple: to invite them to join hands and hearts with Morris Cerullo World Evangelism for a great outreach for souls in their city.

I was excited. Surely these pastors would share the same heartbeat for souls that burned in me. I couldn’t have been more wrong. The atmosphere was thick with suspicion and cultural tension. If looks could kill, I’d have been in heaven that day—and you wouldn’t be reading this now!

A Question That Changed The Room

In that moment of tension, I whispered a quick prayer, pushed aside my prepared notes, and looked around the table. Out came a question I hadn’t planned: “How many of you would like to know how to never make a mistake in your ministry?”

They looked surprised. I was surprised. Inside I thought, “Where did that come from?” But before I could think twice, the words followed: “Just do nothing for God—and you’ll never make a mistake in your ministry.”

The room fell silent. Then I explained that whatever differences we might have in style or approach, one thing was undeniable about Dr. Cerullo: he lived for God and His Kingdom at one speed only—full speed. I shared the sacrifices that he and Theresa made over decades to take the Gospel to the nations. If in that great assignment he might have done some things differently, fine—but when he stands before God, he will never be reproved for failing to give his all for the King and the Kingdom.

The atmosphere broke. Guarded looks softened. We joined hands for the sake of souls, and God moved mightily in Birmingham during that crusade. Praise the Lord!

Mistakes Don’t Cancel God’s Call

Here’s the truth: Moses made mistakes. Abraham made mistakes. David made mistakes. Peter made mistakes. And you and I have made our share, too. But our mistakes do not cancel God’s call.

As you step into your promotion, remember: Your mistakes have not disqualified you from what God has already qualified you for.

Abraham’s Failure — And God’s Faithfulness

Did you ever put someone you love at risk just to protect yourself? Abraham did. The father of our faith, the friend of God, lied to King Abimelech to save his own life and in doing so, placed his wife Sarah—the woman destined to become the mother of nations—in danger.

“Abraham introduced his wife Sarah by saying, ‘She is my sister.’ So King Abimelech of Gerar sent for Sarah and had her brought to his palace.” (Genesis 20:2 NLT)

If I were God, I might have said, “You’re finished, Abraham.” But God didn’t. He stepped into the situation Himself, appeared to the king in a dream, and said, “You are a dead man, for that woman you have taken is already married… now return her to her husband, for he is a prophet, and he will pray for you.” (Genesis 20:3, 7 NLT)

Think about that! God still called Abraham “My prophet.” Even in failure, God defended him. God fixed what Abraham broke and in the process honored and elevated him in the very place he had fallen.

That’s how God deals with us. Even in our weakness and compromise, He has our back. He is not looking for ways to expose or embarrass us—He is looking for ways to restore us.

God Hasn’t Changed His Mind

Romans 11:29 (NLT) declares, “For God’s gifts and His call can never be withdrawn.” God’s plan for your life still stands.

My favorite verse in the entire Bible says it this way:

“God does not just sweep life away; instead, He devises ways to bring us back when we have been separated from Him.”
— 2 Samuel 14:14 (NLT)

God doesn’t devise judgment; He devises restoration. When you run, He plots your return. When you fall, He writes your comeback story. He even knows how to bless your Ishmaels—those situations that came from impatience or human effort. He told Abraham, “As for Ishmael, I will bless him also.” (Genesis 17:20 NLT)

If God can bless Ishmael, He can bless the parts of your life that didn’t turn out the way you planned. His mercy always finds a way to bring you back into His purpose.

Your Setback Is God’s Setup For Your Comeback

A setback is simply an unexpected change from better to worse—a reversal, a disappointment. But in the hands of God, your setback becomes a setup for your comeback.

Your failure is not final, and it’s not fatal. If you’ll give God your ashes, He will give you beauty (Isaiah 61:3). He gives “the oil of joy for mourning, and the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness.”

When others walk away, God leans in. When people sell you short, heaven buys more. I often say that when a stock begins to fall, investors sell to cut their losses—but when God sees you falling, He doesn’t sell—He invests more! He invests in you at your lowest point so He can get the greatest glory when you rise again.

God’s not cutting His losses with you—He’s doubling His investment.

David, Absalom, And The Heart Of God

David knew what it was to face deep family pain—his daughter Tamar violated, his son Amnon murdered, and Absalom banished. Out of that heartbreak came one of the greatest revelations of the Father’s heart:

“All of us must die eventually. Our lives are like water spilled out on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again. But God does not just sweep life away; instead, He devises ways to bring us back when we have been separated from Him.”
— 2 Samuel 14:14 (NLT)

You can’t get your past back, but God isn’t holding it against you—He’s working on your future. The apostle Paul said, “I focus on this one thing: forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead.” (Philippians 3:13 NLT)

God is not devising judgment—He is devising restoration.

Jonah — No Plan B

When Jonah ran from God’s call, God didn’t replace him. He sent a storm, a fish, and a turnaround—not to destroy him, but to bring him back. Why? Because there was no one else who could fulfill Jonah’s assignment.

And there is no one else who can fulfill yours.

God’s call on your life is personal. There is no substitute, no “Plan B.” Your calling might be delayed by disobedience, but it will never be denied by grace.

God Is Cooking Up Your Comeback

The word “devise” means “to cook up.” God is the Master Chef, mixing the sweet and sour moments of your life into something glorious. Romans 8:28 says, “And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose.”

God is blueprinting, designing, and orchestrating your return. Nothing in your story is wasted—every ingredient will serve His purpose.

Gideon — From The Bottom To Victory

Gideon was hiding in fear at the bottom of a winepress when the angel of the Lord appeared and called him a “mighty man of valor.” God wasn’t describing who Gideon was; He was declaring what He could become.

Gideon protested, “How can I? My clan is the weakest, and I am the least.” But God replied, “Surely I will be with you.” (Judges 6:15-16)

That’s the greatest secret to any comeback: God is with you. You may feel disqualified, but His presence is your qualification.

Declaration

Say this aloud right now:

God’s plan for my life is still in motion. He is for me. He believes in me. He sees more in me than I see in myself. My setback is His setup for my comeback. My promotion is still in motion!

Prayer Of Activation

Heavenly Father, thank You that my mistakes have not disqualified me from the destiny You prepared for me. Even when I fall short, You defend me, restore me, and call me by my true name. I choose to let go of the past and step into the future You see for me. I believe that failure is not final. Beauty will rise from my ashes, joy will replace my mourning, and praise will silence my heaviness. I declare in faith that my comeback begins today—in Jesus’ name, amen.
